Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga on Tuesday confirmed his ODI retirement and said that he is hopeful of representing his country in the upcoming 2020 T20 World Cup. Yesterday, Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne had announced that the veteran pacer will retire from ODIs after playing the first match of Bangladesh series.

"I hope to be able to take Sri Lanka to the next T20 World Cup. I hope I will have an opportunity to play in that tournament, Malinga told reporters on Tuesday on the sidelines of a practice session.

The pacer, however, insisted that he would only continue if there was a place for him in the side.  “But if there are better players than me, I don't mind being left out," He said.

Malinga has been around for a long time for Sri Lanka. He has been their top-performer, especially in the white-ball cricket. However, the pacer finally decided to call it a day in One-day Internationals. He, though, would be continuing to play T20 cricket.

Pertinently, the right-arm pacer might also be seen in the Indian Premier League and other franchise-based leagues given he maintains his fitness. The way Maling performed in the World Cup indicates that he still has some cricket left in him.
