Having recently announced retirement from One-day Internationals, former Sri Lankan captain said that he is ‘very happy’ to leave so as new players can make it through before the next World Cup.

"I am very happy to leave at this time. This is an opportunity for new players to prove themselves and prepare for the next World Cup," Malinga told reporters.

Malinga has had an exciting career. He arrived as a mystery bowler with a completely unorthodox action. His breathtaking yorkers will surely be remembered for a long time. After serving his nation for 15 years, the 35-year-old called it a day in ODI cricket. The first ODI of Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh three-match series will be his last.

The runners-up of 2011 World Cup didn’t impress heavily in the just-concluded World Cup, however, Malinga believes Lanka can come back stronger.

"We may have had some setbacks, but we have the capability to win another World Cup," he said.

The pacer at the fag end of his career remained the highest wicket-getter for Sri Lanka in the World Cup, which indicates what impact he has had to his side. He now wants youngsters to showcase and take the responsibility going forward.

“The young players need to believe that they can deliver. They need to be dedicated and develop to a level that they can decide for themselves when they go to the middle," Malinga said.
