England vs Ireland: Michael Vaughan feels ‘embarrassed’ after hosts rattle on 85 runs in first innings
Former England captain expressed disappointment with hosts' downcast show against Ireland in the first innings. Here is what he said
Former England skipper Michael Vaughan on Thursday said that England’s batting display was ‘embarrassing’ as they were bundled out on 85 runs in the first innings by Ireland. The visitors stunned one and all with their exceptional bowling on Day 1 of Lord’s Test on Wednesday.
Vaughan while lashing out the Englishmen termed it ‘embarrassing’
"When the ball does anything you shut your eyes and hope England get through it," Vaughan told the BBC’s Test Match Special.
"There were some good balls but there was also some timid play and poor strokes. Let’s be honest, it’s an embarrassment — you’re at the home of cricket, in a test against Ireland and you’re all out for 85, there is no other word to describe it."
The ball was doing a bit on the Day 1-morning session and Ireland bowlers made most of it. England batsmen were put on backfoot as Tim Murtagh was looking unstoppable. The pacer scalped a fifer. For hosts, only three batsmen crossed two-digit scores.
England batting coach, Graham Thorpe complimented his team for returning to field promptly after triumphing World Cup on July 15. He, however, said this can’t be an ‘excuse’ for poor batting display against Ireland.
"I would say the players have to show an enormous amount of character and mental strength as well to be able to come back down from last weekend and to be playing this week. We can’t run away from today’s performance, can’t make excuses — it’s been a bad day." Thorpe told reporters.
