An unreal spell of bowling by Ireland’s experienced campaigner, Tim Murtagh on Wednesday left England in tatters at Lords in the solitary Test. The pacer scalped his maiden five-wicket-haul in Test cricket to give Ireland an upper hand in the match.
The visitors surprised one and all as they started the match on a spectacular note. Bowlers, Murtagh, in particular, bowled exceptionally well to put Englishmen on backfoot. The 37-year-old seamer first removed debutant Jason Roy and followed with Rory Burns’ wicket.
He was well supported by Mark Adair who also finished with three wickets. With only three players crossing the two-digit mark, England was bundled out on paltry 85 runs. Joe Denly who made 23 runs was the highest run-getter for hosts while Sam Curran and number 10 batsman Olly Stone contributed 18 and 13 runs to the total, respectively.
Ireland would have not hoped for a better start going into this Test match. They are well on top at now, however, need to show the same touch with the bat. If they manage to start the inning well, the match will surely turn out to be an interesting one.
Meanwhile, Tim Murtagh, who actually was born in England and went to play for Ireland, will be remembered for a long time for this magical spell.
