In a major relief to singer and television actor Karan Oberoi, the Bombay High Court on Friday granted him bail in an alleged case of rape and extortion. According to a report in Times of India, the court granted him bail on a surety of Rs 50,000. Oberoi was accused of spiking a woman's drink and raping her as well as filming her and then further using the footage to blackmail her and extort money. The woman had alleged that Oberoi had done all of the things mentioned under the pretext of marrying her. However, during the proceedings earlier, the court had stated that the entire incident was not too believable.
As per the TOI report, while granting bail, the court observed that the woman appears to have filed the second FIR to deny him bail and that police investigation has shown that the May-25 FIR of assault on her was false and staged by her in connivance with her lawyer.
In his bail plea, Oberoi has argued that the FIR is concocted and that he never committed or promised marriage, and his continued custody is denial of justice, and that she filed a second FIR by staging an attack only to fabricate grounds to deny him bail.
To make Karan's case stronger, his lawyer had earlier furnished evidence in form of WhatsApp messages which were also revealed to the media during a press conference held by his close friends including Pooja Bedi and Oberoi's Band of Boys members.
