High Blood Pressure: What is Labile hypertension and how to prevent it?
Today we are talking about a type of hypertension which is known as Labile hypertension. This occurs when a person's blood pressure suddenly or repeatedly changes from normal to abnormally high.
High Blood Pressure aka hypertension is one of the common ailments across the world. The same is also known as the silent killer as it is one of the sneakiest health disorder and symptoms can be easily missed. High Blood pressure is when the pressure of blood against arteries' walls are higher than normal. If you have BP more 130/80 mm HG then you may be suffering high BP. If left untreated and unchecked, then it can lead to other health complications such as stroke, heart attack, eye, kidney and brain issues.
The disease is so prevalent in India that one in three Indians suffer from it. Genetics, obesity, poor lifestyle and drinking alcohol heavily are some of the causes of it. Aside from medications, simple lifestyle changes can help to bring down elevated levels of BP. Increasing the intake of potassium-rich foods are often recommended as the same negates the impact of salt or sodium.
Today we are talking about a type of hypertension which is known as Labile hypertension. This occurs when a person's blood pressure suddenly or repeatedly changes from normal to abnormally high. For the unversed, everyone's BP rises and falls several times a day. There are many factors such as physical activity, body position, diet and emotions among others. But this condition mostly happens during stressful situations and swings in levels are abnormal.
Deepak L. Bhatt, M.D., M.P.H. whose letter was published health.harvard.edu. said, "The best way to diagnose labile hypertension is with ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. You wear a device that automatically measures your blood pressure every 15 to 30 minutes during the day and every 30 to 60 minutes at night. Some people worry they won't be able to sleep with the cuff inflating throughout the night, but it's not as disruptive as you might think. The resulting readout may allow your doctor to pinpoint the source of your blood pressure spikes."
Speaking of the causes, this condition mostly occurs when the person is anxious or stressed. Sometimes there is a spike in BP when a person visits a doctor as they are anxious about the visit. This form of labile hypertension is also known as “white coat hypertension” or “white coat syndrome.” As per Dr. Deepak, one of the common but lesser-known causes of labile hypertension is consumption of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
