The Little Mermaid: Halle Bailey REACTS to backlash over her casting as Ariel
A few weeks ago, Disney announced that The Little Mermaid will feature Halle Bailey play the role of Ariel. This resulted in major backlash, with #NotMyAriel trending on Twitter. Halle has now addressed the backlash.
Unless you've been living under the rock, you might have come across the news that Disney is making a live-action movie on The Little Mermaid. After the success of movies like The Jungle Book, The Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast, the Mouse House would be eyeing at recreating a successful box office run with Ariel. The production house had then announced that Halle Bailey has been roped in to play the role of Ariel. The news did not go down well with social media users.
Several Disney fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment over the casting. The hashtag "#NotMyAriel" began trending on social media. Several online users couldn't picture Halle as the new Ariel. However, Halle doesn't care so much about the backlash. The soon-to-be Disney's on-screen mermaid spoke to Variety and shared her thoughts on the backlash. She said she was not paying attention to the backlash.
She said, "I feel like I’m dreaming, and I’m just grateful, and I don’t pay attention to the negativity. I just feel like, you know, this role was something bigger than me and greater. And it’s gonna be beautiful. I’m just so excited to be a part of it."
We are as excited as Halle is to watch her way out of the deep blue seas and find her prince charming. While we know that Halle will be our new Ariel, it was reported that One Direction singer Harry Styles is being considered to play the role of Prince Eric. While we wait for it to be announced, we do know that Melissa McCarthy, Jacob Tremblay, and Awkwafina have been roped in for prominent roles in the movie. The movie has been directed by Rob Marshall.
