Australia vs West Indies, World Cup 2019: Shai Hope keeps Windies' hopes alive
After openers departed early, Shai Hope brought West Indies back in the match, playing a gutsy knock of 68 runs
Shai Hope on Thursday played one of the best knocks of his career as the right-handed batsman made gutsy 68 runs against Australia in the ICC World Cup 2019 match number 10. His contribution with the bat has now given West Indies a chance to stun Australia in the match.
Earlier, Jason Holder’s men surprised one and all with their excellent performance in the opening match by thrashing Pakistan. They continued the exceptional run by shifting Aussies to back foot earlier today. The Windies bowlers removed as many as four Australia wickets with just 38 runs on the board.
However, Steve Smith made sure they make a strong recovery. The right-handed batsman scored a fabulous knock of 73 runs, putting the pressure back on West Indies. However, it was all-rounder Nathan Coulter-Nile who did the real job. The tall lad played an unreal inning of 92 runs in 60 balls to help Australia post a good total of 288 runs on board.
In reply, Windies also didn’t find a good start. First, Pat Cummins sent back Evin Lewis to the pavilion in the second over of the innings while later, Mitchell Starc removed the dangerous Chris Gayle. Though it was the duo of Nicholas Pooran and Shai Hope who came to the rescue. The former made fiery 40 runs while the latter chipped with a crucial 68 runs in the chase. Windies are now six wickets down and require 70 odd runs to win the match.
