Since yesterday morning, the tabloids, the web and the nation is inundated with the news of funnyman Kiku Sharda’s arrest following a complaint filed by the religious group Dera Sacha Sauda for imitating their leader Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.

If we observe this controversy from the point of view of the religious group, irrespective of its authenticity, mocking a “spiritual leader” for a TV personality, was bound to have undesirable consequences. In a country like India, where religion is akin fuel, all its needs is a spark of offensive comments to set aflame many mosques, temples and streets.

So, there is no doubt is saying that Kiku went wrong by impersonating Ram Rahim on the TV, thereby, hurting the religious sentiments of a self-proclaimed religious group. Sensitive issues pertaining to religion should not be messed with for peace’s sake even at the cost of time pass humour. This incident is also a wake-up call for comedians to think and decide how far they should go in putting together a comedy act and where they need to draw the line.

On the other hand, let the religious groups practice what they are meant to do – promoting tolerance! So, if they know they are genuine, why not practice tolerance by putting up with sly remarks or humour or figure out different ways to safeguard their honour from being torn to shreds by the funnymen? Is getting someone arrested the solution?

We welcome your opinion, readers!
