Jofra Archer, Sam Curran and Olly Stone released from Ashes squad for county T20 Blast
Jofra Archer suffered from a side strain recently, and has been released for the Ashes squad so he can play county games and prove his fitness ahead of the second Test.
Jofra Archer, Olly Stone and Sam Curran have been released by England from the Ashes squad so that they can play the T20 Blast games that will be held on Friday. Archer will also play for Sussex in a three-day Second XI game next week so he can prepare for the second Ashes Test. With James Anderson getting injured during Day 1 of the first Ashes, Archer is in with a chance to play the second Test, and he will be eager to grasp on to his opportunties and make a mark in the county games.
Archer was selected in the 14-man squad for the Ashes - his maiden Test call-up - but was not selected in the 11. He was England's leading wicket-taker in the World Cup 2019 and had a huge hand to play in them winning the title for the first time.
Archer, who suffered a side strain recently, was rested for the game against Ireland, and he was not picked for the game against Aussies as well so he could recover.
"Jofra is coming back from quite a serious injury," said England skipper Joe Root, explaining his omission. "We looked at conditions and made a decision on what we thought would best take 20 wickets here.
"It also gives him time to get absolutely ready and fit to make sure he has his workloads up and ready to go for later in the series if he needs to make an impact. [His fitness] will be monitored throughout the week. It's important that he's ready to go to offer something different."
Curran and Stone too will play for their county teams on Friday, as will Eoin Morgan and Adil Rashid.
