Ashes 2019: Jofra Archer gets maiden Test call-up as England announces squad
England on Saturday included paceman Jofra Archer in the 14-member squad for the first Ashes Test. Check out the whole squad
Fast-bowling sensation Jofra Archer was on Saturdarday named in England’s 14-member squad for the first Ashes Test to be played from August 1st. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) provided the pacer with an opportunity to showcase his skills with the red-ball after an impressive outing in the ICC World Cup 2019.
Ben Stokes who has been in top form England was also reappointed as the vice-captain while Joe Root will continue to lead. Seamer James Anderson and wicket-keeper batsman Jos Buttler also returned to the side after having missed Ireland Test.
Moreover, young fast-bowler, Olly Stone also made a cut following a good stint in the one-off Test against Ireland.
Commenting on the selection of the squad, National Selector Ed Smith told agencies: "Though it is unusual to select a squad of 14 for a home Test, there are compelling reasons to do so here. Several bowlers are recovering from injuries or niggles. In addition, some bowlers who played in the World Cup are being closely monitored to assess their preparation for Test match cricket."
"The wider circumstances - a successful home World Cup campaign followed so quickly by a home Ashes series - are unprecedented. It feels sensible to select an expanded squad and leave a number of bowling options open for the final team selection."
England’s squad for first Ashes Test: Joe Root (capt), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Jonny Bairstow, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Sam Curran, Joe Denly, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, Olly Stone, Chris Woakes.
