The maverick Kapil Dev was the captain of the Indian team as they clinched their first-ever World Cup in 1983. Playing a huge role in India's cricketing journey, we look at some of the most interesting facts about Kapil Dev, who has been nicknamed the Haryana Hurricane.

1. Kapil Dev is the only cricketer to score more than 4000 Test runs and get more than 400 wickets as an all-rounder. 

2. He is also the only player who has the rare record of never getting run-out in his Test career. Playing 184 innings, Kapil was never dismissed after being found short of the crease. 

3. He is the youngest all-rounder in world cricket to have achieved the feat of scoring 1000 runs and getting 100 wickets at the mere age of only 21. 

4. The cricketer played a huge hand in leading India to the 1983 World Cup triumph. As a player, he was phenomenal, and his knock of 175 against Zimbabwe after India had been reduced to 17 for 5 is rememebered even today. It was the first ever ODI hundred by an India. 

5. The player never missed a Test match because of injury or fitness reasons - such was his dedication to keep himself fit. 

6. He is also the first and only cricketer to complete his debut hundred in Tests by hitting a six in 1979 against West Indies. 

7. Kapil Dev has also starred in Bollywood movies like Stumped, Mujhse Shaadi Karoge, Dillagi... yeh Dillagi, Aryan, Chain Kulli Ki Main Kullu and Iqbal. His life story has also been recounted in three movies - By God’s Decree (1985), Cricket My Style (1987) and Straight from the Heart (2004).

8. The record for the most wickets held by an Indian in a calendar year is held by Kapil Dev. He had picked up 75 scalps in 1983 in 18 Tests. 

9. Kapil Dev's family went to great lengths to support their son in his cricketing journey. After it was known that he needed more milk to get stronger, his family bought 2 buffaloes!

10. He is worth a staggering $30 million, making him one of the richest Indian cricketers of all time. 

11. He was given an honorary tag of Lieutenant Colonel of the Indian Territorial Army in 2008.
