Weight loss as we know can be achieved in several ways and some of the common tactics are following healthy and balanced diets and indulging in exercising. However, of late, we have been noticing that many other ways such as calories, deficit, boosting metabolism and eating patterns among others apparently help to get rid of extra weight. And now, detoxification or detox of the body is one of the popular buzzwords in the health circles. Many studies have claimed that detoxing body is one of the ways to lose weight. People often indulge in detox drinks and detox diets to eliminate toxins from your body.

During the detox phase, one has to limit intake of alcohol, drink more water, sleep and rest more, reduce the consumption of salt and sodium-rich foods and packaged foods, increase the consumption of antioxidant-rich food items, Prebiotics-rich foodstuff and exercising. Many as mentioned, follow it get slim down. But does it actually work?

We asked nutritionist and food coach Arpit Sharma to comment and share his views on whether detoxing is the key to shed extra pounds to which he said, "Liver is the only organ in the human body which is responsible for excretion of all kinds of toxic substance from our body and that's why one should take extra care of the liver. This extra care can be taken by including detoxified liquids or supplements in a daily routine. The best detox drinks are milk thistle, apple cider vinegar, cold brew low caffeine teas and coffees, wheatgrass juice and herbal teas among others."

But he added how these detoxifying foods and juices work only 10 to 15% and 80-95% cleansing depends on the overall dietary pattern, diet, lifestyle, exercise, sleeping habit, cycle, and meditation. He said that the ultimate and useful detoxification way is a regular habit of doing intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting we all know is one of the top ways to lose weight. He also added how detoxing can lead to the production of fat-burning hormones and keeps a balance between fat loss hormones and weight gain hormones and thus aiding in weight loss.

Speaking of intermittent fasting, in the same one has to eat during a particular time window and for the rest hours, one has to be on fast. Most people follow the 16:8 eating pattern. In the same, one has to fast for 16 hours and eat healthy and balanced food during the rest of the 8 hours. Another popular fasting pattern is 5:2. In the same, people can fast for 2 days and eat healthy food for the remaining days. If you are beginner then you can start of by fasting for 10-14 hours and then extending to 16-hour format.

He also revealed that apart from helping in body weight management, detoxing also helps in maintaining hormonal levels, it also aids in excreting toxic chemicals, substance, elements and heavy metals which we get via foods, water, air, pollution, radiations and gas among others.
