Love dimples? Here's EVERYTHING you need to know about them and if you too can get them
The small indentations that can be found on your skin are often viewed as something that beautifies the face as a whole. Here is all you need to know about dimples.
Dimples can be found on various place of the body - on the cheeks, the chin and lower back. When it comes to the cheeks they can be found either on one side or both sides of the mouth.
And while some people have dimples, others don't. This is because the muscles in the face have been formed differently.
How are dimples formed?
Dimples are usually formed on the face due to the change in the facial muscle called zygomaticus major - a muscle which involves facial expressions and helps raise the corners of your mouth, enabling you to smile.
For people who have dimples, the muscle divides into two bundles of muscle in the mouth. The movement of the skin over this muscle when one smiles, causes the dimple to form. For people who don't get dimples, the muscle is not split into two.
Therefore, it can easily be said that dimples are a birth defect! But at the same time, they don't pose any negative health effects!

How to get cheek dimples?
Dimples of any kind, on the cheek, chin or the back are all hereditary. They are an inherent dominant trait and people with dimples are known to have children with dimples.
However, adequate research has not been conducted to prove this.
There is another way to attain dimples, though. There is a new type of plastic surgery that has been introduced which helps create dimples in the cheek. Dimpleplasty is a small incision made into the part of the face where the dimple needs to be. Surgically, a small amount of tissue will be removed from the area and a small stick called a sling will be passed through the muscle of the skin which brings the skin together and created a hollow, forming a dimple.
Before opting for this it is important to take into consideration the risks and complications which might arise after surgery. Some of them include:
- Bleeding
- Nerve damage
- Swelling
- Infection
- Scarring
It is important to take all these factors into consideration as it is extremely difficult to reverse the effects of this kind of surgery.

Are dimples considered attractive?
Dimples are often associated with beauty and good luck in some cultures. Studies that have been conducted around human facial features suggest that if there is a dimple, it makes the smile more noticeable or convey the intensity of a person's character.
