Hello Therapist: I have been born in North India and now living in the South; I feel very out of place and low

Hello Therapist,

I  studying at a college in Kerala and I am from Uttarakhand. My mother is from Kerala but I have been born and brought in North India. Initially, I thought I will be able to manage in the South but here it feels like I am in a different altogether. I know a little Malayalam but it is still hard for me to follow what is being said here. I want to transfer to a college in the North and I called many colleges but it seems it is not possible since the course is not the same. I know I should just let it be and adjust here but I can't seem to get this bad feeling out of my system. I feel so out of place. I don't know what to do now.

Hello Pinkvilla Reader,

It is natural to feel helpless in such a situation.. But you have a big advantage here. Your half-knowledge of Malayalam can help you tide through this crisis. I feel if you work a little on your language it will help you complete your degree which is a priority. There are many people like you who have to travel to different places for education and learn the native language which can be a difficult, necessary but not impossible task. You seem to be quite low and have taken the situation from a negative perspective. You could try and make a good friend help you. Keeping good company will keep you away from negativity. Meanwhile, try to learn some more Malayalam from your mother or an extra class.

You could seek professional help for your low mood if it prevents you from moving ahead.
