Can stress affect your skin? Here’s all you need to know
Is there a mind-body connection that can lead to more wrinkles, pimples and dark spots due to stress and anxiety?
Due to busy lifestyles and hectic work schedules, the levels of stress and anxiety are increasing day by day. Have you ever noticed that rising stress levels have affected the tone or appearance of your skin? You may not be wrong after all. Ever wondered why that pimple or dark spot break out right before you need to present yourself at an event, exam or meeting? Well, overthinking, worrying and stress could be behind it. When your body is experiencing a high amount of stress, it produces hormones such as cortisol that can lead to oily skin. With the rush of oil glands inside hair follicles filled with dirt and dead skin cells, there can be a breakout of eczema, psoriasis, acne or rashes.
From leaving under eye bags or puffy eyes to rashes, blemishes and fine lines, your skin gets directly affected by mental health disorders. A healthy diet plan and an increase in physical activities can help keep it in control. Not just skin, but hair loss is also a reaction to physiological stress or anxiety. Stressed people are also likely to have picked or bitten nails. Not only does it damage your nails, but also leads to an infection. Wondering how to keep it in check? Make sure you don’t go through an extreme change in your diet, medical issues, or sudden lifestyle changes. Stress may also make you a tad bit more ignorant towards skin and hair care regimes. However, you must make sure you take extra care, wash, exfoliate and moisturise your face daily.
However, it is important to note that stress does not directly cause these problems. But if you’re stressed or worried for a prolonged period of time, it can aggravate your skin and hair problems. So, take a break, breathe and take part in activities that you enjoy. Don’t forget to drink plenty of water and sleep for at least eight hours a day.
