After India’s defeat in the semi-finals of the World Cup, a lot has been spoken about the rift between India’s captain and vice-captain and BCCI is looking for split captaincy as an option.
India’s defeat against the Black Caps in the semi-finals of the World Cup 2019 has given rise to controversies regarding the rift the Indian team. The Men in Blue were extremely dependent on its opener Rohit Sharma and skipper Virat Kohli to score runs for the team in the World Cup tournament. It was also said that a review meeting is going to be conducted with the CoA (Committee of Administrators) and the path of next year’s T20 World Cup will be discussed. It is also said that the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) will be keen to discuss split captaincy for the Men in Blue.
Speaking to IANS, one of the board functionaries mentioned that good teams always start their preparations early after the end of a campaign. There have been speculations that India will consider their option of having Rohit Sharma lead the shorter formats of the game, whereas, Virat Kohli will continue to lead the team in tests.
"This would be the right time for Rohit to take over the mantle of the captaincy in the 50-over format. There has been immense support to the present captain and the management and it is time to plan ahead for the next World Cup and for that the existing ideas and plans need a fresh look. We all know some areas need a relook. Rohit would be the right man for the job," the board functionary added.
