Virat Kohli will not have any say in the selection of new head coach
The BCCI has made it clear that skipper Virat Kohli will absolutely not have any say when it comes to selecting the new head coach of the national team, Here's why
Team India's skipper Virat Kohli will not have any role when it comes to selecting the new head coach of the national team. Currently, the support staffs have been given a 45-day extension after the ICC World Cup 2019 where they went down to New Zealand in the semis. According to reports, the entire selection process of the head coach will be overseen by a committee headed by 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev. This decision might have been taken keeping in mind former coach Anil Kumble's tenure where decided to step down of the post citing a rift with Virat Kohli during the Champions Trophy two years ago.
"Last time, the captain had expressed his difficulty, or the team's difficulty, with former coach Anil Kumble. In the new selection process, he will have absolutely no say with regards to who becomes the coach. This time, we have Kapil Dev in the coach selection committee, and he will not listen to him," a BCCI official told.
For the selection of the head coach of the National team, the trio of Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy will look into the process and no member of the current squad will be consulted.
The BCCI also said, "Support staff will be picked by the selection committee. Normally, we allow the head coach to do that for team building. This time, if the head coach is selected (before the selection of the support staff), he might join the process."
Up next, Team India will travel to the Caribbean island for 3 T20Is, 3 ODIs and 2 Tests between 3rd August and 3rd September. The tenure of the current set of support staffs will come to an end after this series.
