Watch: Shashi Kapoor talks about his Bollywood journey in this interview

Shashi Kapoor played the younger version of the character played by his elder brother, the late Raj Kapoor in Awaara.

Shashi Kapoor, who found success as a romantic heart-throb in Bollywood as well as a serious actor in crossover English films, passed away on Monday evening in Mumbai at the age of 79.

Kapoor had been unwell for the past few days and was undergoing treatment at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital, where he was admitted on Sunday night for treatment of a chest infection.

As the news of his death shocked many, condolences started pouring in on social media from B-Town celebs and his fans. From Amitabh Bachchan to Priyanka Chopra to Akshay Kumar, stars offered their heartfelt condolences to the yesteryear actor. 

In his career span of nearly four decades, Kapoor has acted in some amazing films. Shashi Kapoor has acted as a child actor in several Hindi films. Some of his best performances include films like Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath, Kabhi Kabhie, New Delhi Times, Roti Kapda Aur Makan, Heeralal Pannalal, Deewar,  Satyam Shivam Sundaram, Raja Saab, Pighalta Aasman and many others. He has also acted in several English films such as The Householder, Bombay Talkie, Heat and Dust and many others. Kapoor was India's first actor to go international and work in English movies.

Today, we got our hands on a video where he is talking about his Bollywood journey. He says, ‘’I started first with the theatre, and then I started working in films as a child artist. I worked in Raj Kapoor’s Aag (1948) and then I worked in Awaara (1951). And then at the age of 20-21 I started working in films as a young actor. But I hve previously worked in theatres.’’

Kapoor played the younger version of the character played by his elder brother, the late Raj Kapoor in Awaara. He also worked as an assistant director in the 1950s.

Shashi and his wife Jennifer Kendal set up the Prithvi Theatre in 1978 in Mumbai’s Juhu locality. Jennifer died of cancer in 1984.

He was also honored with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and three National Film Awards.
