Thalapathy Vijay's film Bigil had landed in trouble before its release. A copyright complaint was filed against the makers of the film by debutant director Nandi Chinni Kumar. Nandi Chinni Kumar from Hyderabad alleged that he had bought exclusive copyright of Akhilesh Paul, a sports personality, performer to make a feature film in any language. As per Kumar’s complaint, he had approached "major film studios and production companies in Bollywood and Tollywood." Now, a cheating case has been registered against Akhilesh Paul, director Atlee, producers of AGS company, Mahesh Koneru and Ramana Girivasan.

Dr. Nandi Chinni Kumar revealed that he tried to get in touch with the writer and director Atlee but got no response. He even contacted AR Rahman, and the other producers of the film but got no response from them. Nandi also reached to Telangana Cinema Writers Association, South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce, Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce, Telugu Film Producers Council, Tamil Film Producers Council and Indian Motion pictures Producers Association.

He said, "Inspite of filing complaints well before the release of the film BIGIL/WHISTLE to Central Board of Film Certification, stating the films breached Cinematography Act and Copyright Act and mentioning I am the exclusive copyrights holder, they have ignored my complaints and went on to issue the Censor Certificate negligently ignoring the serious complaint which breaches Cinematography Act."

He further added, "Even though I have approached well before the release of the film, I will fight until I get the justice, necessary damages, credits and compensation."
