Team India's Head coach Ravi Shastri recalled their memorable performance against the then World Champions West Indies at Old Trafford, Manchester in 1983. He added that their win on the opening day of the tournament against the mighty West Indies gave the team the belief to tackle any opposition which came their way.
"It all begun here (at Old Trafford) in the summer of 1983. India played on the opening day against the West Indies, a team that had never been beaten in World Cup history. This was the meeting point and India beat the West Indies on this very ground. Plenty has changed here since then," Shastri told the bcci.tv.
Here's the video:
"Behind the ground are the railway tracks and I will never forget that. When the game got tight Joel Garner hit one right into the railway tracks. I for one will never forget the game because I took the last wicket. That win started it all. It gave us all the belief that we could beat any side, once we had beat the West Indies. There was no stopping us. Good to be back here. 1983 is what changed the face of Indian cricket," Shastri added.
In the opening game of the 1983 World Cup, India posted a competitive total of 262 in their allotted 60 overs. Yashpal Sharma top scored for India with 89 off 120 balls. In reply, India bundled out the West Indies for 228, giving them a famous victory against the World Champions. For India, Ravi Shastri and Roger Binny picked up three wickets each.
The current Indian side will face the West Indies at the same venue on 27th June.
