Dev Anand, born on September 26, 1923, was an actor and filmmaker like no other. He was amongst the first 'cool' actors of Bollywood who broke the shackles of stereotypical cinema and gave us movies that shocked and moved us beyond compare. Whether it be Hare Rama Hare Krishna(1971), which boldly tackled with the Hippie Culture or even Jewel Thief (1967) whose climax had shocked many at that time. He was rightfully touted as the original King of Romance of the Indian film industry with movies like Manzil (1960) and Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961).
Dev Anand has been awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2001, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for cinematic excellence in 2002 and the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi for Guide in 1965. When it comes to his personal life, his love affair with Suraiya was much talked about during those times. However, it never ended in marriage because of opposition from Suraiya's grandmother. Ultimately, in the year 1954, Dev Sahab married Kalpana Kartik and was with her until his death in 2011. The two had two children Suneil Anand and Devina Anand Narang.

It was on December 4, 2011, when Dev Sahab breathed his last in London at the age of 83. The cause of death was announced to be a cardiac arrest. His last acting credit was Chargesheet (2011).
