Jin on BTS' donation to Black Lives Matter: When we're abroad, we've also been subjected to prejudice
BTS members Jin and RM revealed in a recent interview as to how BTS came to the decision to donate and speak in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.
When the Black Lives Matter movement went into full gear mode post the tragic death of George Floyd, BTS stepped forward in support of BLM while also donating USD 1 million to the movement. BTS ARMY, too, offered their support by matching up to BTS' USD 1 million within 24 hours. "We stand against racial discrimination. We condemn violence. You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together. #BlackLivesMatterFurthermore, they've also donated to other important causes on social issues," BTS had tweeted.
During a recent interview with Variety, BTS members were asked as to how they came to the decision to speak about BLM along with the considerable donation. "When we’re abroad or in other situations, we’ve also been subjected to prejudice. We feel that prejudice should not be tolerated; it really has no place," Jin stated while adding how BTS started to discuss what they could do to help, whether through donation or something else. The eldest BTS member revealed that it was where the conversation began, just trying to see what they could do to try to alleviate this prejudice.
RM resumed by confessing that BTS was "aware of the fans, the hashtags and their participation." The septet's support to BLM was a decision which Namjoon says was thought about very carefully as to what they could do, as a part of their overall message of speaking out against prejudice and violence.
"We discussed it very carefully with the company and that’s how this came about," the Bangtan leader concluded to Variety.
It was indeed an honourable gesture by BTS and BTS ARMY!
