ICC World Cup 2019: Luke Wright & other players criticise Iceland cricket’s tweet for Rashid Khan
Iceland cricket's Twitter handle trolled Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan for bowling the most expensive spell in the World Cup, and English cricketer Luke Wright comes to his rescue.
Rashid Khan conceded 110 runs in 9 overs and is now the bowler with the most expensive spell in the history of the World Cup. Several trolls and criticism paved the way for this young bowler as Afghanistan lost the match miserably by 150 runs against the hosts. However, Iceland cricket’s jibe at Rashid Khan made the former English all-rounder, Luke Wright furious and asked them to be respectful instead of trying to be funny.
Iceland Cricket tweeted as, “We’ve just heard that Rashid Khan has scored Afghanistan’s first century of the #CWC19! Wow! 110 from 56 balls. The most runs ever scored by a bowler in the World Cup or something. Well batted young man. #ENGvAFG #AFGvENG.”
Luke Wright called this tweet rubbish and said, “Rubbish tweet. Rather than trying to be funny why not be respectful to someone that has done so much for cricket and especially associate members.”
England’s Jofra Archer quoted this as a “Terrible tweet”
. Indian cricketer, Pragyan Ojha also came to defend the Afghan cricketer and criticised the pitch. He tweeted, “What on earth is the pitch made of? There should be a balanced competition between the bat and the ball. You feel sad when the balance is disturbed. #RASHIDKHAN’s bowling stats in the match is a shocker! #ENGvAFG #CWC19.”
The Iceland cricket later apologised and mentioned that it was all said in a humorous way. They tweeted as, “We’re really sorry. Mick Lewis goes for 113 off 60. Stuart Broad goes for 36 off 6. Ben Stokes goes for 24 off 4. Everybody had a laugh at them. We didn’t see this as any different. But evidently it is. Hands up. We apologise. @JofraArcher @lukewright204 @ish_sodhi @dizzy259.”
