ICC World Cup 2019: Hashmatullah Shahidi on him playing despite being hit on head: Didn’t want to hurt mum
Afghanistan’s Hashmatullah Shahidi continued to bat after getting hit on the head by a bouncer bowled by Mark Wood and went on to score 76 runs.
The hosts registered a comfortable win against the Afghans by 150 runs at Old Trafford cricket ground. Afghanistan’s batting crumbled against the English bowling attack; however, it was Hashmatullah Shahidi who went on to score 76 runs and helped the team to reach 247 runs. This 24-year-old faced a bouncer bowled by England’s Mark Wood and was on 24 when the ball crashed against his helmet. However, he continued to play the match and went on to score 76 runs before getting bowled by Jofra Archer.
After the match, Shahidi told the reporters that he got up early because of his mom. He also explained that he lost his father last year and didn’t want her to be hurt. His whole family was watching the match, along with his big brother who was watching the match in the ground. He didn’t want them to be worried for him.
Shahidi added, “The ICC doctors and our physios came to me, and my helmet was broken in the middle. They told me, ‘let’s go’”. However, Shahidi declined and said that he can’t leave his team at this moment, they need him and so, he carried on to bat. However, after the match, Shahidi went up to the ICC doctor who assured that he’ll be fine in a few days.
Afghanistan will play its next game against the Men in Blue on Saturday, June 22 at Rose Bowl cricket ground.
