Spin, Disney's first Indian American movie is ready to roll and it's exciting
Disney Channel just announced its latest movie Spin, which features an Indian-American girl Avantika in the lead. The movie revolves around Avantika, who plays Rhea Kumar in the movie.
Disney Channel's Spin is exciting for many reasons. For starters, it is an Indian-American girl in the lead, and the story follows her incredible journey! That's right, Avantika Vandanapu plays the main lead, Rhea, who is passionate about her career as a DJ, creating blends of Indian and Western mixes. Isn't that exciting?
The movie is about Rhea finding the courage to follow her heart. The 15-year-old talented girl lives with her multigenerational family. She helps her father manage their restaurant after her mother’s death. Rhea's life is all about her eclectic group of friends, her coding club, and her family’s restaurant. Rhea's life changes when she falls in love with music. She discovers her natural talent for producing music. However, the challenge is to get her near ones on board. Disney Channel recently released the teaser saying, "Hey, DJ! Can you play #DisneySpin? Get ready for the all-new #DisneyChannel original movie dropping this summer!" The movie is produced by Zanne Devine (Secret Society of Second Born Royals, Easy A, Tonya) and written by Carley Steiner (Play Date) and Josh Cagan (The Duff).
The movie is directed by Manjari Makijany, an Indian writer-director based in Los Angeles. She has also worked on Desert Dolphin, India’s first skateboarding feature, which will be released globally on Netflix in 2021.
Vandana is seen here celebrating Diwali with her co-actors from Spin. In an interview with a Hollywood daily, Avantika said that she was eager to get this movie out in the world. She said she wanted to encourage young girls to follow their aspirations.
