The King of Pop Michael Jackson continues to stir international media even today. While his dance moves and music remain legendary, Jackson also courted controversy on several occasions during his career. Even to this day, controversies seem to have affected the pop star's rep. In a latest move, MTV has quietly removed Michael Jackson's name from their prestigious Video Vanguard Award. The award was named after the King of Pop for his contribution to music.

The reason for striking off Jackson's name comes in the wake of the controversial 2019 HBO documentary 'Leaving Neverland'. In the documentary, Jackson's friends, Wade Robeson and James Safechuck, recall chilling stories of molestation told in graphic detail, making it impossible to view Jackson in the same light again.

While MTV included Jackson's name on a press release sent out to announce rapper Missy Elliott as this year's Vanguard recipient, Jackson's name was quietly excluded from the other promos. The Video Vanguard Award is a prestigious one and earlier recipients have included David Bowie, Madonna, The Beatles, Beastie Boys, and Beyoncé.

While announcing Elliott's name this year, the network chose to stick to it as the Video Vanguard Award. However, in her speech Elliott referred to it as the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. The MTV VMAs 2019 were an exciting affair for music lovers across the globe.

While singers like Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello turned up the heat, Taylor Swift, who won Video Of The Year Award, used her acceptance speech to bring the Trump administration's attention to the Equality Act concerning rights of the LGBTQ community.
