Katy Perry is an American singer, songwriter and TV judge. Perry signed with Red Hill Records and released her debut studio album titled after her birth name Katy Hudson in 2001. However, it was commercially unsuccessful. Perry gained fame in 2008 with her second album, One of the Boys, a pop rock record comprising the singles "I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot n Cold". The track ‘I Kissed a Girl’ sparked controversy for its themes of homosexuality.

Katy Perry has received various awards including four Guinness World Records, five American Music Awards, a Brit Award and a Juno Award. She has been included in the annual Forbes lists of highest-earning women in music from 2011 to 2018. She is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. She has sold more than 18 million albums and 125 million singles globally in her career. Perry began serving as a judge on American Idol in 2018.

Katy Perry gained fame due to her second album which had the song titled ‘I Kissed a Girl’. The song sparked controversy for its homosexual themes, but in retrospect, it has been viewed as the beginning to LGBT awareness in pop music.

The song is from the point of view of a teenage girl. Lyrically, the girl contemplates her first time and how "it wasn't right". She realises through that experience that her "prince" is still "out there" waiting for her. Some critics called it as a powerful and lovely song. Commercially, the track peaked at number 53 on US Billboard Hot 100 chart and at number 41 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart. 

3] Circle the Drain


Lyrically, Circle the Drain candidly focuses on one of her former lover's drug-addiction and the strain it put on both of them. The song achieved modest charting, with its highest peak position being number 30 on the Canadian Hot 100.

4] Peacock


Peacock was criticized severely by music critics and musically it was compared to the 1980s hit "Mickey" by Toni Basil and Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" (2005). 

5] Walking on Air


The song was part of a poll promoted by Pepsi, along with Dark Horse, where fans could vote for which song they wanted to become the first promotional single from Prism. The song was released as part of H&M's holiday campaign along with a promotional commercial. It is a gospel-inspired Christmas dance track about how love is the best Christmas gift. It was Perry’s first Christmas song. The song was ranked number one on a "Best Holiday Songs of 2015" list.

8] Waking up in Vegas


Waking Up in Vegas is a pop rock track about an underage couple getting drunk and blowing their money in Las Vegas, paying homage to the phrase "What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". The song reached the top 10 in over eight countries, including the USA, where it peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming Perry's third top ten single.

9] Teenage Dream


Teenage Dream as a throwback song to the euphoric feelings of being in love as a teenager. The song has topped the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Perry's third number-one single on that chart.

10] California Gurls


According to Perry, California Gurls is an answer in the form of a song to Empire State of Mind (2009) by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys. Its lyrics are a praise to the state of California, in which both Perry and Snoop Dogg were born and raised.
