Former New Zealand skipper, Brendon McCullum pleased with how the team handled loss in the final
Brendon McCullum praises New Zealand team’s success throughout the ICC World Cup 2019 tournament.
New Zealand lost the final of the ICC World Cup 2019 on the basis of scoring lesser boundaries than the hosts. However, the former New Zealand skipper, Brendon McCullum revealed that he spent time with the team post their defeat and was extremely pleased with the way they handled the defeat. He said that even though it was a bit different from the 2015 World Cup loss, they have handled themselves magnificently in the aftermath of that result. “Yes, it would've been lovely to have been a World Cup champion but I've always said the game doesn't define you but it's the person and character you are. I was so pleased with how our team handled that loss, also the success throughout that tournament,” McCullum told Stuff.co.nz.
McCullum also revealed that he was lucky enough to have a beer with them in the changing room and said that they were pretty broken for sure. However, he mentioned that the team was really proud of what they did and how well they played. “Over the coming months and years, whilst it's still raw now, they'll understand just how magnificent that spectacle was. And for it to happen on the biggest of stages, to have played the hand that they played in that match is absolutely amazing," he added.
McCullum also recalled the 2015 defeat against Australia and said that it was a missed opportunity, but he looked at the positives of the rest of the tournament and what that did for the game in the country rather than focusing on the last minute.
