MS Dhoni smashed a brilliant fifty in the game against West Indies which contributed to the team’s huge 125 runs victory in the tournament. However, he was criticised for his slow-run rate at the start of his innings before smashing 16 runs off the last over in the match.

Indian stalwart, Sourav Ganguly defended the former skipper and said that it was just one off and he would not look too much into it. Ganguly admitted that MS Dhoni has been in a similar situation in the past when he came to England last year and he faced the same problem with the spin.

According to Sourav Ganguly, Dhoni needs someone to play with him. “If he bats with Virat Kohli at three, KL Rahul at 4 and he is at 5, or with the likes of Hardik Pandya, life becomes a lot easier for him because they keep hitting and he keeps rotating the strike,” he added.

When asked about his opinion on his innings against West Indies, Ganguly said that he would like to wait before passing a statement on how well he has played, especially with his strike rate. This is because MS Dhoni has the ability to hit the boundaries and play differently. He also mentioned that with the kind of experience, quality and ability that MS possesses, he will definitely succeed in the upcoming games.

India will next encounter England tomorrow, June 30 at Edgbaston cricket ground.
