5 Reasons why The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel should be your next binge-watching show
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel stars Rachel Brosnahan as Midge Maisel.
Binge-watching TV shows are the latest trend in town and discussing those popular TV shows have become watercooler gossip.
If you're looking for a new show to take you away from your mundane life and transport into an alternative universe over a span of a few episodes, then I have just the show for you.
If you haven't watched The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which is available on Amazon Prime Video, what exactly are you waiting for? Whether it be the lead character Midge Maisel or even the stand-up comedy background, this show will keep you hooked in the first 5-minutes of the pilot episode.
As you contemplate for the show to be your next binge, here are 5 reasons why I feel The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is the show of 2017 that you cannot miss:
The Storyline:
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel takes place in 1958 in Upper West Side, New York. The story is based on the perfect Midge Maisel who is married to the man of her dreams with two kids. However, it all goes downhill when her husband Joel leaves her for another woman. A heartbroken Midge accidentally stumbles onto the stage at a comedy club and discovers her own comedic skills. In the process, she goes on her journey of self-discovery.
Witty Style of Writing and Dialogues:
Joel: Do you ever think you were supposed to be something and you suddenly realise you are not?
Midge: Yes, married!
This is just a glimpse of the witty dialogues that will leave an imprint on you, way after you have watched the show.
Amy Sherman-Palladino (known for her writing style in popular shows like Gilmore Girls and Roseanne) served as the writer for the pilot episode. The tone of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is very rapid and every line is quote-worthy. It's no surprise the show has been nominated at the Golden Globe Awards 2018 for Best Television Musical or Comedy.
Use of Comedy to Subtly Show Women Empowerment:
While comedy is the foreground of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, it's subtlety lies in self-discovery and women empowerment. Sherman-Palladino has cleverly spread the message of a woman's transformation and getting rid of the norms and rules imbibed in her by the society and more importantly her parents.
The Lead Character Midge Maisel:
You will fall in love with Midge Maisel who plays the young, petite and perfect woman with a sassy mouth that could genuinely make you laugh out loud. You will relate to her character although she is technically from the 1950's and you will sympathise with her even more. You will roar in laughter at her wit and you will marvel at her transformation with pride. Again, is it really a surprise that the impeccable Rachel Brosnahan who beautifully essays the role of a paradox Midge be nominated at the Golden Globe Awards 2018 for Best Actress in a Television Series Musical or Comedy?
The Supporting Cast
Along with Rachel, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is backed by a strong cast including Midge's trophy husband Joel Maisel (played by Michael Zegen), her overbearing parents Abe Weissman (played by Tony Shalhoub) and Rose Weissman (played by Marin Hinkle) and her eventual confidante Susie Myerson (played by Alex Borstein).
