Kargil Vijay Diwas: Why The Kargil War will Always Instill the Feeling of Patriotism in All of Us!
Today marks the 17th Kargil Vijay Diwas, in honour of the men who lost their lives during the Kargil War. This incident brings out the patriotism in all of us as it fills us with pride to know how our army, sacrificed their lives to ensure our safety. How they fought the war and won the battle.
The war was fought between India and Pakistan in Kargil, Ladakh in 1999. In India, the conflict is also referred to as Operation Vijay.
Pakistani soldiers and Kashmiri militants had infiltrated positions on the Indian side of the LOC and that was the cause of the war between the two nations. It was former PM, Atal Bihari Vajpayee who declared the operation successful on July 14, 1999. However, the operation was officially declared closed on July 26, 1999.
India lost more than 500 military men. Pakistan claimed that more than 3000 of their soldiers, Mujahideens and officers died.
A number of Indian soldiers were felicitated for their bravery and sacrifice which include, Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav, Havildar Chuni Lal and Captain Vikram Batra among others. Built by the Indian army, the Kargil War Memorial Wall in Dras has inscriptions off all the Indian soldiers who lost their lives in the war. The Memorial also has a museum with documents, recordings and pictures of the Indian soldiers at Kargil.
In popular culture, a Bollywood movie on the Kargil War titled LOC: Kargil came out in 2008 and it is one of the longest in Indian Movie history, running for more than 4 hours.
