Former spinner Daniel Vettori has stated that current New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is the best ODI player from the country. Writing in his column for the International Cricket Council, Vettori went on to state that the right-hander's calmness and his positive approach has made him one of the greatest players.

The statement came after the skipper smashed an unbeaten 106 in a stiff run chase against South Africa on Wednesday. On a wicket that did not aid run-scoring, Williamson held one end up as he took his team over the line with 4 wickets to spare. With this win, New Zealand remained unbeaten in the edition.

"Kane Williamson has to be New Zealand’s greatest ODI player of all time — and innings like that against South Africa tell you exactly why,” “He’s already there now and by the end of his career his record will far exceed anything we’ve had in the past or present, he really is that good.”

He went on to explain what made him so different.

“Kane has done so much in such a short period, whether a captain or not, he’s been exceptional and he’s an absolute joy to watch. He plays all the shots; he knows how to manipulate the strike and he’s always going to run hard. What differentiates him from a lot of batsmen in this day and age is his sole focus is winning the game and he tailors his batting towards that.”

New Zealand next face West Indies on Saturday. They have won four of their five games, with the one game against India washed out due to rain.
