Godzilla: King of the Monsters records LOWEST opening weekend BO collection in the franchise of all time
Godzilla: King of the Monsters might hold the top spot this weekend. But the movie has not fared well in comparison to the 2014 release Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters released over the weekend. The MonsterVerse movie was the third movie from the franchise. Although the movie took the top spot at the US box office over its opening weekend, the movie witnessed a sluggish start as compared to the other movies in the franchise. Before Godzilla: King of the Monsters released, the franchise saw Godzilla movie and Kong: Skull Island release. Both the movie performed well at the box office. However, Godzilla 2 couldn't come close to the previous two releases.
The recent movie release earned a disappointing $49 million at the US box office, Variety notes. This is an embarrassing picture painted for the recently released movie since the 2014 Godzilla earned a whopping $93.1 million during its first weekend. Whereas, Skull Island recorded a box office collection of $61 million. The King of the Monsters couldn't become the king of the franchise. The international waters came to Godzilla's rescue this time. The movie posed a box office collection of $130 million internationally. This brought the worldwide cume of $179 million.
This comes as a shock to many as the movie was touted to be a huge summer hit. However, the reviews were not in the movie's favour. And eventually, the audiences to weren't impressed by the Millie Bobby Brown starrer. As a result, the opening box office figures are unimpressive. It is to see if the movie will pick up over the weekdays or continues its sluggish performance.

Meanwhile, in India, the movie earned Rs 15.25 crore, Box Office India reports. Speaking about the movie's box office collection, distribution chief of Warner Bros Jeff Goldstein said feels the movie will draw in the audiences. He said, "The avid fans of Godzilla came out Thursday and Friday. The real key for us is how broadly can we expand over the next couple of weeks? Can we hold on to an interest that's wider than the regular Godzilla fans? I think we can."
