Ben Stokes likely to be knighted for his performance in the World Cup 2019 final against New Zealand
Ben Stokes was the Player of the Match in the final against New Zealand in the World Cup 2019. His knock of 84 helped his side tie the 50-over game, and the Super Over was tied as well. England won eventually due to the boundary count
England's Ben Stokes is likely to receive knighthood after his heroics won his team their maiden World Cup title at Lord's on Sunday. The all-rounder played an unbeaten knock of 84 against New Zealand and helped tie the match, after early wickets had pushed them on the backfoot.
UK Prime Minister candidates Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt said that they would try their best to bestow Stokes with knighthood. It should be kept in mind that either Johnson or Hunt will replace Theresa May this month.
"I will give dukedoms, whatever - I will go to the maximum, too, what, the Garter King of Arms. Yes is the answer, absolutely," cricket.com.au quoted Johnson as saying.
"Of course," added Hunt, when he was asked about honouring Stokes as well.
England went down history books as they claimed their first title in 44 years. The game did not have a winner after the 50-over and the super-over both ended in a tie. The game was ultimately awarded to England as they had hit more bounadries in the match.
Eleven English cricketers have already been knighted for their services to the country. The most recent recepient was Sir Alastair Cook, who was honoured for his performances in both ODIs and Tests.
Stokes, who was the Player of the Match in the final, had been involved in a brawl fight in 2017 and had to spend a day in jail last year as well. However, he was later found not guilty.
