India vs South Africa, World Cup 2019: Dale Steyn ruled out of the World Cup
South Africa's woes deepen in the ongoing World Cup.
South Africa's Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the ongoing World Cup after a second shoulder injury that has not responded to treatment. Left-arm seamer Beuran Hendricks has been named as his replacement.
Steyn, will be out of action for the "foreseeable future" and did not feature in any World Cup games his side played this year. Neither did he take part in the warm-up games. The 35-year old was also ruled out midway during the IPL. Captain Faf du Plessis had admitted that Steyn was not 100% fit when the team was picked.
"He was probably about 60 percent when the squad was picked, so we anticipated for this to happen, but a fit Dale Steyn makes our bowling attack a very, very strong one," du Plessis had said on the eve of the England game.
The team, though, still expected Steyn to be fit for the game against India on Wednesday, but his shoulder continues to be a pain point. He underwent surgery on the shoulder in 2016, and since then, it has been a constant struggle. After the IPL, Steyn returned to consult a specialist and a recovery plan was set in place to get him back to full fitness by May 19, the day South Africa departed for the World Cup.
South Africa have plenty of injury concerns going into the game. Hashim Amla suffered a head injury and missed the game against Bangladesh, while Lungi Ngidi was injured against the Tigers. The pace attack, which looked threatening before the edition started, is jostling to find fit seamers ahead of the clash with India.
