Sri Lankan cricket team, over the past few years had been unable to create an impact in International cricket. As far as the World Cup is concerned, they lost both of their warm-up matches and their first official match of the tournament against the black caps where they couldn’t manage to get past 136 runs in the first innings. However, they made a strong comeback against the Afghans in their previous match.

However, former skipper Mahela Jayawardene said that the Sri Lankan team should have aimed for 250 plus score in that match at Cardiff against the Afghans where they scored 201 runs. He also metioned that the Sri Lankan batsmen lacked confidence in that match and there is a need for improvement in the batting attack.

In a column that he wrote for the ICC, Jayawardene showed his concerns towards the team’s batting lineup. He said that, “There is no question that Sri Lanka could have batted better. After such a good start, where Kusal Perera batted beautifully and they had two big partnerships, it was disappointing to see them lose their way in the middle,"

However, the former skipper praised the Lankan bowling attack and said that they did well in difficult circumstances. With Nuwan Pradeep and Lasith Malinga’s exceptional bowling they managed to defend the total and register a 34 run victory at the end

Sri Lanka will play its next game against Pakistan on June 7 at Bristol County ground.
