Salman Khan is like Karan of Mahabharat: Salim Khan
He might have scripted blockbusters like Zanjeer (1973), Deewar and Sholay (1975), but Bollywood screen writer Salim Khan is one of the most humble people in the industry that one would ever come across. A self-confessed admirer of the epic Mahabharat produced by Siddharth Kumar Tewary, the 78-year-old reveals that he learnt the art of giving that ‘twist in tale’ from this ancient literature.
In a candid chat , he tells why he feels his son, Bollywood star Salman.Khan , is like the warrior Karan, and also reveals the secret of his closely-knit family. "Taking cue from Mahabharat. I’ve read Mahabharat several times from a very young age … not as a religious book but for knowledge, and realised that in this epic, a lot of small twists have a bigger impact later — be it Bheeshm’s pledge or Dharmraj Yudhistir announcing the death of Aswathama (where he doesn’t mention that it was the Aswathama elephant and not Dronacharya’s son Aswathama who has died). "
Inspired by Mahabharat, he beleives that his son Salman Khan is just like Mahabharat's Karan. "Salman’s character is like Mahabharat’s Karan. In fact during the making of Karan Arjun (1995), Salman had a choice to play either Karan or Arjun. He asked me, and I said Karan because Arjun might be a principled, disciplined man but he doesn’t have the shades of Karan. Just like Salman, Karan has a complex character, he is fighting from the wrong side … he is silent and has his own inner conflicts to battle."
On being associated with Producer Siddharth Kumar Tewary as a consulting writer he says, “ I am a consulting writer for the TV show Mahabharat”. Creator Siddharth Kumar Tewary says, “It’s an honour to have Salim Khan as the guide for Mahabharat. His experience and knowledge is unparalleled”
