EXCLUSIVE: “Many years ago someone offered to make me Madhuri Dixit” – Jaya Bhattacharya UNPLUGGED!
Television actress Jaya Bhattacharya, who rose to fame as the vicious Payal of ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’, has never sought stardom frantically. She is one of the rare actresses who have let go of alluring offers, meaty deals and thirst for glamour for she loved being who she was and was confident of making it all by her own. In a recent chat with Pinkvilla.com, the ‘Gangaa’ actress doled-out some facts close to her heart that speak highly of her strong guts and practical thinking.
On being quizzed about the mantra that helped her survive in Showbiz, Jaya said, “If I have always walked with my eyes on the ground beneath so that I don’t stumble and suffer a fall.”
The 43-year-old actress also said that for her, the word “star” has no meaning. “I get a weird feeling when I hear the word “star”. I can’t relate to this word. This word appears shallow to me,” she said as a matter –of-factly, while also adding, “jab tak aapki chadhaan hai, tab tak aapko har koi salaam karta hai. Jaise hi aapki dhalaan shuru hoti hai, jo ki har kisi ke saath hota hai, waise hi aapko aise joote padte hain ki apko samajh nahin aata hai ki aap kahan atko.. kai log beench mein “Trishanku” ki tarah atke rahjaate hain. Yeh maine pehle se hi dekh liya hai aur bahot pehle se hi is baat ka ehsaas kar liya hai (Till the time you are rising in the showbiz world, people salute and honour you. But, when your sheen begins dwindling, which happens with everyone, the same people start hurling shoes at you. At that time, many people get stuck like a “Trishanku” in the middle-ground. I have witnessed this pattern of the world and have experience it as well).”
In an age wherein, aspiring actors are willing to go to any length to become an actor and often lose heart when failure strikes, Jaya never gave undue importance to acting as a profession. “I never went crazy by nurturing such degenerating thoughts because I was never fond of becoming an actress. I was never like ‘if I don’t become an actress, my life will be finished.’ This thought never came into my head,” she shared.
However, the test of her faith in herself and her ideals came when a rogue offered to make Jaya another Madhuri Dixit.
“Many years ago, someone offered to make me Madhuri Dixit. He was making a fool of me. I told him straightaway that I don’t want to (become like Madhuri). I told this to him very honestly. I turned down his offer because I thought – ‘why should I be someone else?’ Whatever I am, I am very good, Boss! (Laughs),” said the actress.
