EXCLUSIVE: Qayamat Ki Raat's Vivek Dahiya on MeToo: Nothing is going to be enough till such incidents STOP
Vivek Dahiya speaks about the MeToo movement which has been taking over the internet. Read to know his stand.
The MeToo movement spearheaded by women on social media has emboldened women and men to come out and share their horrific encounters with sexual harassment. Bollywood director Vikas Bahl, Rajat Kapoor, Alok Nath, Utsav Chakraborty, Khamba, Varun Grover, are amongst the few who have been called out by different women on the social media. The latest case to take the country by storm is that of Alok Nath who has been accused of rape by Tara producer Vinta Nanda.
In an exclusive statement to us, we asked Vivek that while many leading actresses and men are coming out to share their stand on the recent MeToo movement, there are a few who continue to maintain silence, is it enough? To this, he said, "Nothing is ever going to be enough till such incidents STOP!!!! Speaking up is crucial, punishing is crucial and making sure that these incidents stop is urgent! Women need to feel safe and we need to let them concentrate on their work, grow in life and do whatsoever they wish rather than having to worry about their safety."
Given that TV is largely a women-orientated industry, on a personal level how does he make sure to make women feel safe in the work environment? Vivek added, "Well, the women who work with me know that I won't tolerate any nonsense from anyone around. So I know that those who are in my realm are protected. I like to make sure that we are working in a respectful environment and that while we should be enjoying work, we need to make sure that no one feels uncomfortable as well."
Lastly, we asked him if he thinks the TV industry in particular is sensitized enough for women to work in without fearing repercussions. "I think because we are part of the media, news tends to be sensationalized more but what is going on within the industry is a mirror and reflection of what is happening outside as well. Women overall are being threatened no matter where they are working and their safety has become a major issue. Look at how many rape cases are happening and sadly so many are from within the family, so where is the safety?" he stated.
