The perception of TV actors being dumb needs to change - Karan Wahi
TV is a medium to entertain and somewhat educate viewers literally for 24 hours. From shows like Shanti to Naagin, Indian TV has seen a lot of changes in terms of presentation, content and acting too. While Indian TV seems to have a monotonous approach towards content, its VFX and extra effects seem to have taken over the ideology of having a well-written show leading to loss of logic.(Not all shows though)
Recently, at the launch of the hit singing show Indian Idol, we caught up with the dapper Karan Wahi who spoke to his heart's content on why Indian shows need to mature soon, the way they did in the 90's. "Shows like Remix, Dill mill Gaye or even Kyunki, had its own genre. When we worked, we thought of the content and its creativity. We did not make content for TRPs unlike now, fortunately, or unfortunately. In today's time, TV actors have become replaceable, on mere grounds of the budget and availability. I just hope a day comes when a creatively great show, a nice concept is made and accepted by viewers. I really hope, a show, be it on any channel, done by any actor with great content works, because if it does then nothing like it as more shows will be made! Nowadays a Naagin works because it's creatively buyable in that space. But now everybody wants to make Naagin. Look, I am not expecting a Narcos, a How I met your mother or FRIENDS on Indian TV, I am not. That is not the buy-ability of Indian Television.
Further, Karan expressed how he feels that the perception of looking towards TV actors needs to change soon. "I was once asked what would I like to change on Indian TV. I would like to say the majority of the actors on Indian TV are intelligent people. But with the kind of work that is portrayed, many term us to be as dumb people. No, we are also cool people, we love watching Narcos and can speak fluent English," he quipped. "This perception of TV actors being dumb needs to be changed and that can only happen if we do good stuff," he added.
The gentleman, who is all set to host the hit show Indian Idol, also stated how anchoring is no doddle. "As an anchor, you are expected to be the driver of the show. You are the connecting part between the judges and contestants. The contestants are already nervous because of the media glare, the celeb judges etc, so the anchor's work is to chill them out. When it is hosting for a kids show, it is easy because the kids reciprocate and say things which are unexpected, it leads to the atmosphere being fun-filled. But when it comes to hosting for shows where the contestants are of the same age as the hosts, it becomes difficult because then there is a fine line that you need to make sure not to cross. On this show, there is a married girl, there is a married man, so you need to be funny, you need to be witty but also you need not cross the line as well," said Wahi.
And that's definitely an arduous task Karan!
Indian Idol is all set to air from 24th December and marks the reunion of Farah Khan, Anu Malik and Sonu Nigam as judges together.
