On 27 March, 2019, India successfully tested the Anti-Satellite (ASAT) Missile named Mission Shakti. Where a low-orbiting satellite was destroyed in a missile test and this has put the country in the space 'super league'. The missile was launched from the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam island launch complex. The mission was successfully executed with an existing satellite operating in the lower orbit. This mission proved India's ability to interdict and intercept satellites orbiting in the outer space with the help of indigenous technology and has established the country as a 'space power' among other space faring nations such as USA, Russia and China.

Defence Research and Development Organisation's Missile Defence interceptor was used for the mission. The test was conducted in order to prove India's capability to protect and safeguard country's space assets. In an address to the nation on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Mission Shakti. He said, "In the journey of every nation there are moments that bring utmost pride and have a historic impact on generations to come. One such moment is today". He further added in his address that the mission is not directed against any country and the satellite was a pre-determined target orbiting at an altitude of 300 km.

In the journey of every nation there are moments that bring utmost pride and have a historic impact on generations to come.

One such moment is today.

India has successfully tested the Anti-Satellite (ASAT) Missile. Congratulations to everyone on the success of #MissionShakti.

#MissionShakti was a highly complex one, conducted at extremely high speed with remarkable precision. It shows the remarkable dexterity of India’s outstanding scientists and the success of our space programme.

#MissionShakti is special for 2 reasons:
(1) India is only the 4th country to acquire such a specialised & modern capability.
(2) Entire effort is indigenous.
India stands tall as a space power!
It will make India stronger, even more secure and will further peace and harmony.

The kinetic kill technology was used for the mission which left no space debris. India has undertaken 102 space missions in the past along with The Mangalyaan Mission to Mars following the Gaganyaan Mission which will take Indians to outer space. India believes the space belongs to the entire humankind and must be used for peaceful purposes.
