As per another legend, on this day, Shiva drank the poison of negativity to protect the world from all evil. Also, there is another tale which states that Lord Shiva performs Tandav on this day and thus, prayers and chants are needed to calm him down. Maha Shivratri is celebrated at night and people offer prayers in the form of chanting of mantras and more.
On this day, people wake up early in the morning and offer prayers to Lord Shiva after taking bath. They also observe a fast on this festival and only take fruits in the day. They chant mantras and shlokas to please Lord Shiva. In temples, pandits and followers visit all day and chant Om Namah Shivaay and other Lord Shiva mantras all day.
