One of the most awaited festivals in North India for married women is Karwa Chauth. It is a festival that celebrates the bond of love and marriage between husband and wife. Karwa Chauth is primarily celebrated in Northern India in states like Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. It is celebrated by married women who pray and fast for their husband’s long life on this day. However, life every Indian festival, this festival also has a story behind it. The Story of Queen Veervati is very popular and is usually heard by women who observe this fast in the evening.

Queen Veervati was the only sister to seven brothers who loved her dearly. She was married and spent her first Karwa Chauth at her maiden home. She kept the fast for her husband and stayed without food and water all day. However, she was very hungry and felt weak. She kept waiting for the moon to show till evening. On seeing her suffer from starvation, her loving brothers decided to help her break the fast. They artificially created the moon by burning trees in a forest. They came back home and told her that the moon was out. They asked here to break her fast and eat. 

She asked brothers why no one else was breaking the fast. They told her that they also will break their fast but she should do it first. She goes ahead and breaks her fast. As soon as she eats, she receives the news that her husband had passed away. She was devastated and she prayed to Goddess who appeared in front of her and told her that her brothers tricked her into breaking her fast. She feels terrible but Goddess tells her to keep the fast again sincerely. She keeps the fast again with complete devotion and thus, Yamraj was impressed with her commitment. He brought her husband back to life again. Thus, Queen Veervati’s story became the reason behind celebrating Karwa Chauth.This is the famous folklore that women listen to in the evening to complete their fast puja. There are a number of other tales as well which are associated with Karwa Chauth, but the story of Queen Veervati is the most famous among them.
