Holi 2019: All you need to know about Puja timing and Shubh Muhurat for Holika Dahan

While some people love the festival of lights, for the majority of us, the festival of colors i.e. Holi is the ultimate favorite and this year, as we celebrate Holi on March 21, we bring you the significance of the festival and all you need to know about this colorful festival and mahurat for Holika Dahan. To begin with, as per the Hindu tradition, Holika Dahan is done in Phalgun month’s Purnima tithi, and a day after the dahan, people celebrate Holi by playing with colours, and pichkaris. This year, 2019, Holi will be celebrated on March 21 and Holika Dahan will take place on March 20, 2019, a day prior to Holi.

Just like we do Diwali puja at a particular mahurat and shubh time, Holika dahan too takes place at a particular time and this year, the mahurat for the Holika Dahan will start from 08:58 pm on March 20, and will go on until 11:34 pm. For all those who are not well-versed with the puja, let us tell you that the puja for Holika dahan is very simple and while performing this Puja, one should be facing the north direction or the east one and during the puja, you’d need certain ingredients such as marigold garland, roli, flowers, Itar, cotton, jaggery, turmeric, sugar, gulal, and coconut. After completing the puja, one needs to take parikrama around the Holika with the glass of water and after this, the puja comes to an end. After the Holika Dahan, one needs to collect the ashes of the Holika and apply on ones forehead.

Post the Holika Dahan, people play Holi on the next day- while some play phoolon ki Holi, others play with gulal of different colors and after playing, people visit each other’s house to pay their reverence for the festival. Besides the puja, Holi is also known for its lip-smacking food that comprises of bhang ke laddoos, Gujia, Malpua, Ras Malai among others and while some people play Holi on the day of the festival, others opt to play with colors before a week to the festival.
