Actress Zaira Wasim of Dangal fame left scores of fans and fellow film industry members surprised and shocked when she announced her disassociation from the field of acting yesterday. Soon after, Zaira became one of Twitter's top trends as reactions from all over began pouring in. While some applauded the actress for taking such a huge step at only 18 years of age, many others criticised and blamed Zaira's religion for this extreme step. In a detailed post on Instagram, Zaira cited religious reasons for her decision to quit her promising career in Bollywood.

She wrote, "As I complete 5 years today, I want to confess that I am not truly happy with this identity, that is, my line of work. For a very long time now it has felt like I have struggled to become someone else. This field indeed brought a lot of love, support, and applause my way, but what it also did was to lead me to a path of ignorance, as I silently and unconsciously transitioned out of 'Imaan' (a Muslim's steadfast path in Allah's devotion)."

One of the many people who found Zaira's step a little too extreme was author Taslima Nasreen. Taking to Twitter, Taslima lashed out at Zaira Wasim calling her decision moronic. "Oh My Goosebumps! Bollywood’s  talented actress Zaria Wasim now wants to quit acting because she thinks her acting career almost destroyed her  faith in Allah. What a moronic decision! So many talents in Muslim community are forced to go under the darkness of the burqa," Nasreen tweeted.

However, Jammu and Kashmir politician Omar Abdullah came to Zaira's defence and said, "Who are any of us to question @ZairaWasimmm’s choices? It’s her life to do with as she pleases. All I will do is wish her well & hope that what ever she does makes her happy."

Since her debut, Zaira has time and again been trolled on social media for her choices in the public eye. Her upcoming film with Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar, The Sky Is Pink, will be her final project.
