1913

1. The first ever Indian feature film, Raja Harishchandra, was released on 3rd May 1913 at the Coronation Theatre in Bombay. It was a silent film, made by Dadasaheb Phalke, the father of Indian Cinema. The film's heroine was a young boy called Salunke, who acted as Taramati.

1920s

2. Few eminent filmmakers of this decade were V Shantaram, Suket Singh, Baburao Painter, Chandulal Shah and Ardershir Irani. Here are some famous films released – Shantaram's Gopal Krishna, Baburao's Maya Bazaar (1923) and Ardershir's Anarkali (1928).

3. Fatima Begum, the first female filmmaker, made Bulbul-e-Parastan in 1926.

1930s

4. India's first talkie, Alam Ara, was released in 1931. Starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Master Vithal and Zubeida, the film was directed by Ardeshir Irani.

5. V Shantaram's 1936 film Amar Jytoi was probably the very first film to talk about women's emancipation.

6. The beautiful and talented actress, Devika Rani, began her Bollywood career in this decade. She starred in filmmaker husband, Himanshu Rai's Karma. Himanshi played her leading man in the film, which is celebrated as the first English talkie made by an Indian. Karma was one of the first films to have a kissing scene. Devika and Himanshu shot for the mentioned sequence, which lasted for about four minutes – tagged as the longest kissing scene in Indian cinema till date!

7. Ardeshir Irani made the first color film, Kisan Kanya, in 1937.

1940s

8. Gyan Mukherjee's Kismet, released in 1943, revolved around some bold themes – another firsts for Indian cinema. The film depicted an anti-hero character as well as unmarried girl getting pregnant!

9. Bollywood's first ever double role (played by Ashok Kumar) happened in Kismet, one of the biggest hits in the history of Indian cinema.

10. Mehboob Khan's Aurat (later remade as Mother India) was released in 1940.

1950s

11. The Central Board of Film Censors was formed in 1951.

12. Raj Kapoor's Awara was released in 1951. The film was a hit, thanks to Raj-Nargis' crackling chemistry, film's screenplay, dialogues and music.

13. Considered as the golden era of Hindi cinema, 50s gave many other classics like Mother India (1957), Madhumati (1958), Pyaasa (1957), Do Aankhen Barah Haath (1957) and Do Bigha Zamin (1953).

14. Do Bigha Zamin, starring Balraj Sahni, was the first film to win an award for Filmare Best Film.

15. Mother India was India's first entry to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1958, and was selected as one of the five nominations under the category.

1960s

16. K. Asif's epic historical love story, Mughal-e-Azam, was released in 1960. The film, starring Dilip Kumar and Madhubala, took 12 years to complete.

17. Satyajit Ray was given the Best Director award at the Berlin Film Festival for his film Charulata, in 1964.

18. Shakti Samanta's Aradhana (1969), starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, became a cult classic. Sharmila received her first Filmfare Best Actress trophy for the film, which was the highest grosser of the year.

1970s

19. Rajesh Khanna felt his career shaking with the arrival of Amitabh Bachchan right in the beginning of this decade. The two worked together in the hit emotional drama, Anand, in 1971.

20. Sholay, the highest Indian grosser of all time, was released on 15th August 1975. The judge-panel at the 50th annual Filmfare Awards named it the Best Film of 50 Years, in 2005.

21. Yash Chopra's 1975 film, Deewar, tagged Amitabh Bachchan as the angry young man, and he went on to give hits like Don and Zanjeer.

1980s

22. Gorgeous actresses, Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit, ruled the roost during this decade. Sridevi's Mr. India (1987), Chaalbaaz (1989) and Naagin (1986), and Madhuri's Tezaab (1988) and Ram Lakhan (1989) had the viewers in absolute awe of these two beauties.

23. Esteemed costume designer, Bhanu Athaiya, was the first ever Indian to win an Academy Award for Best Costume Design (shared with John Mollo) for the 1982 biographical film, Gandhi.

24. India's first sci-fi film, Shekhar Kapoor's Mr. India was released in 1987.

25. Chocolate boy, Aamir Khan, charmed the nation with his super cute looks in Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988), opposite Juhi Chawla.

26. Salman Khan got the girls weak at the knees with his dashing looks in the 1989 love story, Maine Pyar Kiya.

1990s

27. The era marked the arrival of the King Khan – Shah Rukh Khan! He stunned all by displaying his negative streaks as a psycho lover to Juhi Chawla in Yash Chopra's 1993 flick, Darr.

28. SRK and Kajol became the hottest couple with Aditya Chopra's directorial debut, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, in 1995. The film broke records and remains to be the longest-running film in the history of Indian cinema.

29. Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit's Hum Aapke hain Koun..! was released in 1994. The film was a blockbuster.

2000s

30. Actor-filmmaker Rakesh Roshan launched his son, Hrithik, in the 2000 romantic-action thriller, Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai, opposite the newbie Ameesha Patel. The film went on to receive a record number of awards including eight Filmfare trophies.

31. In 2001, Aamir Khan's period drama Lagaan, directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar, got nominated for an Oscar but couldn't win.

32. The action thriller, Dhoom (2004), became the first action-packed film that boasted of Hollywood-like stunts.

33. Sanjay Leela Bhansali made Amitabh Bachchan-Rani Mukerji starrer Black in 2005. The film, one of the best cinematic works, also had a kissing scene between the two versatile actors.

34. Rajkumar Hirani's coming-of-age comedy-drama, 3 Idiots (2009) became the highest Bollywood grosser of all time.

35. Vidya Balan finally came to her own with Ishqiya (2010), which easily had her join the league of Bollywood's finest performers.

From 2010 Till Now

36. The desperation to enter the 100-crore club has only intensified now. Various films have joined the coveted club, including Dabangg series (2010 and 2012), Housefull (2010), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013), and Chennai Express (2013) among others.

37. Vidya Balan's biographical drama, The Dirty Picture (2012), stormed the nation, courtesy the bold actress' no-holds-barred avatar in the flick.

38. The latest releases, Kangana Ranaut's Queen and Arjun Kapoor-Alia Bhatt's 2 States, have been receiving good reviews lately.
