Windows 11 security feature can reduce game performance by nearly 30%, report says

Windows 11 has generally provided a better performance on the same hardware as Windows 11 due to better utilisation of modern processor features.

However, it has been discovered that a new Windows 11 security feature may reverse those gains for gamers.

UL benchmarks, the creator of popular 3DMark, Computer Base, and PC Gamer benchmarks, has been testing Windows 11 and has discovered an issue caused by Microsoft's virtualization-based Security (VBS), which can cause a nearly 30% drop in gaming performance in some circumstances.

UL Benchmark said ”In our testing with pre-release builds of Windows 11, a feature called Virtualization-based Security (VBS) causes performance to drop. VBS is enabled by default after a clean install of Windows 11, but not when upgrading from Windows 10. This means the same system can get different benchmark scores depending on how Windows 11 was installed and whether VBS is enabled or not.”

In PC Gamer's tests, they discovered a hit of up to 28% in Shadow of the Tomb Raider (SoTR). However, the results have been mixed, with Computer Base scoring a smaller hit with Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

This could be due to the version of Windows 11 being tested, with Computer Base testing the Dev channel builds and PC Gamer testing the Beta builds, which are closer to the RTM builds that will be released next week.

According to Microsoft, VBS uses hardware virtualization features to create and isolate a secure memory region from the normal operating system. Windows can use this ‘virtual secure mode' to host a variety of security solutions, providing them with significantly increased protection from operating system vulnerabilities and preventing the use of malicious exploits that attempt to circumvent protections.

It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will be able to further optimise this feature, or if this primarily enterprise-focused security feature will be disabled by default.

According to UL benchmarks, 3D Mark will be updated to detect VBS on a user's system so that fair performance comparisons can be made.
