Airtel demonstrated 5G Cloud Gaming which might more confuse you

Airtel, the renowned telecom operator in India, seems to be heading towards the cloud gaming segment as the company has recently demonstrated one in the country. The telco demonstrated its version of cloud gaming with the help of its upcoming 5G network infrastructure on Thursday. The company has also invited popular esports gaming enthusiasts like Mortal and Mamba to try out the gaming experience on the Airtel 5G trial network. According to the company, the trial was conducted on a 3500 MHz spectrum band, which is said to deliver speeds of ”1 Gbps and latency in the range of 10 milliseconds."

Furthermore, the telco revealed its partnership with cloud gaming platform Blacknut for making this demonstration possible. The cloud gaming trial on the 5G network was achieved on the OnePlus 9R and the fun fact is that the smartphone doesn’t even have a proper 5G support. Asphalt 9: Legends was the game on which the demonstration was achieved.

It seems that the company has decided to run the test on a three-year-old game which seems to run fine even on old generation phones like iPhone 6 and OnePlus 6. Running an old generation game on a 5G network doesn’t convince me, but the company claims that it’s a "high-end PC and console-quality gaming experience".

“Asphalt requires a lot of RAM to run smoothly, and the graphics are really good, so it is one of the most strongest games out there," IGN India quoted Mortal as saying. Mortal reply suggests that the specification of the smartphone is not an issue when it comes to cloud gaming. Airtel is planning to introduce the 5G network infrastructure sometime in 2022.

"I think as [5G] grows all the devices will be - phone guys will come up with [dedicated] devices, laptop guys will come up with ‘this is a gaming laptop, and this is a non-gaming laptop'," Randeep Sekhon, CTO of Bharti Airtel said. "Similarly, with gaming phones as cloud gaming becomes big, I’m sure you will have companies coming up with games which are specifically [designed for] gaming phones."
