Virat Kohli: We are looking to do well in the ICC World Test Championship
The first Test Championship begins from August 1, with India playing their first game against West Indies next month
India captain Virat Kohli stated that the ICC World Test Championship that gets underway from August 1 will have a huge impact on the longer format.
The inaugural edition of the Test Championship will see nine teams - Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, Pakistan, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies - fight it out for the title as they play 71 games across 27 series over the next two years.
The top two teams will play the final that is scheduled for June 2021.
"We are awaiting the ICC World Test Championship with great enthusiasm as it adds context to the longest format of the game," Kohli said in an ICC media release.
"Test cricket is very challenging and coming out on top in the traditional form is always highly satisfying. The Indian team has done really well in recent years and will be fancying its chances in the championship," he added.
Each team will play three home and away series and will get awarded pointrs in every match. Each series will have 120 points, and the points will be distributed according to the number of games in the series. For example, a two-match series will mean 60 points up for grabs in one match. A draw will see the two sides get one-third of the points on offer for that game.
